The 18th of August is Michael Katchan’s show.
If you have read his statement, you may already know,
that Michael is developing as an artist as well as a person,
and at this stage of life, he shares his transformation.
The oils are a metaphor, more than just a medium,
evolving from his previous studies, he advances positive meaning.
Michael Katchen’s work portrays self-reflective quest.
From the King that consumed depression,
to the demon he resents.
With reasoning and wisdom, Michael seeks his balance.
The king that stood in silent strength,
and the girl that forged his talents.
Michael leaves the Kings to rest and departs alongside his palette.
These artworks tell a tale.
These artworks scream a ballad.
Michael finds influence in the art of Ashley Wood,
painters from the Renaissance,
and a creator of comic books.
He is a self-taught artist and a brilliant one at that,
as I browse through his portfolio I find a reference to Basquiat.
Reading through his writings I engage in his intelligence,
relate towards his findings and a display of his developments.
Michael’s “About” page is incredibly well written.
As he refuses a self-description, but still explains his disposition.
The irony of giving the reader what they want whilst denying something literal,
stands out as an artist should, and separates him from the typical.
The Basement Gallery is proud to present Michael Katchen’s artwork,
I promise you won’t be disappointed by this up and coming artist,
come and visit from 5 to 9 on the 18th of August.
Embrace these inner demons so that you too can leave them behind,
view the story of Chrysalis and evolve: body, soul, and mind.
